Pattern Stories

Ferdinand

With Pattern Stories, we embrace a specific wallpaper design and tell the story behind the pattern. We want to show the craftsmanship that leads to the finished wallpaper. We call this Swedish Wallpaper Art.

This time, we tell the story of Ferdinand, a design inspired by the romance of old maritime maps and the spirit of exploration. Like a chart drawn for curious travelers, the pattern invites us to sail across imagined seas.

Some of Leonard Misty Blue's animals also appear in this richly detailed adventure.

Ferdinand’s Tabula Atlantis takes us on a captivating journey to distant lands, rooted in history and infused with playful elegance. Sandberg’s own map unfolds a seafaring tale with antique references, where stately ships navigate the open sea between islands and figures from Greek mythology. Here you will find Scylla—the treacherously beautiful nymph transformed into a sea monster—the sly sea whirlpool Charybdis, and the mighty sea god Poseidon.

"Every island, village, and town carries a name from the Sandberg story, a quiet tribute to the people who have shaped the journey over the years."

Inspired by early maps, the pattern was first launched in 2010 in the Charles collection. The map was carefully composed of hand-drawn cartographic lines, with the astrological zodiac and scattered dots recalling a shimmering sea. With carefully translated Latin names, every village, town, and island is named after people who have had a connection to Sandberg over the years. Some of Leonard’s animals also appear in this richly detailed adventure.

"Ferdinand invites the eye to wander and discover something new in every corner."

Ferdinand is part of the celebratory collection Sandberg Heritage. A celebration of five decades of meticulous craftsmanship, Scandinavian design, and Swedish wallpaper artistry, revisiting beloved classics from the Sandberg Wallpaper archive and reinterpreting them for a contemporary audience.

Ship ahoy! Let the adventure begin.
